From Jet Black to Platinum Blonde

. Sunday, June 28, 2020 .

This is one of the things I've been wanting to write about even before planning to start this blog. Why is that so? Well, because when I decided to go platinum blonde I had some issues like:
  • Most of the articles I found were by people who are naturally blonde, so the journey was easy-peasy for them.
  • Youtubers be like: watch me going platinum blonde at home in 10 min video.
  • People just write about how being blonde changed their life. no offence but i literally give 0 f*cks about this
Therefore, before my first session at the hairdresser I totally assumed I could go from jet black to platinum blonde on the same day.

Chapter 0

CHAPTER 1 - FIRST IMPRESSIONS
└─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───┘
My journey started on March 2019.
After many rejections from several hair salons in Andorra, I could find one that guaranteed I would be able to reach platinum blonde after many sessions. I accepted because after watching Brad Mondo's videos for a while, I knew that with my dyed black hair it was impossible to achieve platinum blonde in one or two sittings. Plus, a trusted coworker told me that hair salon was the best one in the whole country, so I put all my hopes on them and decided I'd be patient and spend my money as long as my hair ended up somehow healthy and platinum.

Red flag nº 1: As a natural or dyed brunette, you can NEVER expect your platinum blonde to be guaranteed.
Red flag nº 2: They didn't know what OLAPLEX was.

I remember my first session because the hair salon owner was nagging all the time because my hair wasn't lifting as expected. She was making so much drama I even thought they already f*cked up my hair and I almost shed a tear.

Fortunately, after my first session, my hair was still there and it was orange before they toned it into a cute brown.

1st session's final result

As I stepped out from the hair salon, my hairdresser promised me I would be platinum blonde by June, right on time for my trip to Korea.

Bonus: When I washed my hair for the first time after bleaching it, I almost panicked when a huge strand of hair fell off. Sweet sweet breakage.

CHAPTER 2 - TAKE A DEEP BREATH
└─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───┘
During the next months, I was attending that hair salon once a month to keep bleaching it, trim the ends and tone it. Every time I would spend around 150€, but I already knew that going platinum was expensive as hell, so I kept spending my money and buying all the hair products they recommended to me. Was I too naive? Probably. I just wanted my hair to be healthy and become platinum asap and had no idea about hair coloring.

I remember one of the hair stylists told me once: "You want platinum blonde? That doesn't exist in real hair, only in wigs!

Finally, the d-day came and I took my orange ass hair to that hair salon, hoping I would step out from there being a fabulous platinum. For the sake of the hype, they turned my chair backwards so I wouldn't see anything in the mirror until the final result. 5 hours later, my hyped hairdresser turned the chair towards the mirror and voilà, I was blonde, kinda. I was copperish blonde.

After my total disappointment, I understood that was the most my hair could lift on that day and I didn't want it to fall off, so I gladly booked another "last" appointment and they promised me I would definitely get my hair goals by then.
I didn't 100% hate my hair but gold wasn't my color at all.

┌─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───┐
CHAPTER 3 - BULLSH*T
└─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───┘
My hopes were quite high on the second d-day. After all, they promised, right?
Well, they basically started the same way they did last time: they turned the chair backwards, did their "magic" and 5 hours later my hair got indeed lighter. It went from level 8 to level 7. I'm not gonna lie, I was disappointed as hell, but then I got even worse news:

We made it, you’re finally a platinum blonde!

I was speechless. At that moment I realized I had to stop going to that place, so from that day I started my research for best hair salons in Barcelona while asking everyone that came to my mind for recommendations. I wanted to go somewhere whose reputation was great enough for me to put my trust in, where the stylists had previous experience in platinum blonde makeovers and actually knew what they were doing and why. That’s how I came across that article from Spain Vogue magazine about the best hair salons for blondes in Spain and found Salón Toro, a chic hair paradise which was hidden in the heart of the luxurious Passeig de Gràcia (Barcelona).

┌─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───┐
CHAPTER 4 - THE REVIVAL
└─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───┘
I will never forget my hair stylist’s face when he got to see my hair closely for the first time. He made his coworkers come to see it while I was sweating out my anxiety due to that hopeless frown I could see in them.

What the hell did you do to your hair? I can see an orangey rainbow in it.

Dear, there’s no way you can go platinum with such damaged hair.

I could feel the tears coming for all the money I spent so far and all the damage I did to my hair which, I believed, had been pointless. However, they commited to try their best and do something about it. And on the first try, ladies and gentlemen, they f*cking did it. On September 2019 my hair looked beautiful for the first time in MONTHS. And most important of all, it was white.

After washing my hair at home few days later

The amount of money I paid for such painstaking work was nothing compared to what I paid during 6 months for having uneven and spotty hair. Plus, they gave me a couple of products that actually worked! (that was a new experience for me).

These are the products that helped my hair look healthier:
